'SEX TALK' AT UWI TODAY! 2012

Yes, sex! It's 'sex talk' in the day-time but I can't swear for what might happen in the night, although I can well imagine. Look here nuh, no matter what guidelines and systems are put in place to prevent such occurrences, I imagine that sexual goings-on are hot and high on the list of unofficial extra-curricular activities for residential tertiary students.

And I imagine it must be particularly and pleasantly challenging for male students who are practically outnumbered by their female counterparts. Blend the tug of testosterone and overabundance of libido with the push of that youthful sense of adventure and the pull of a multiplicity of available prospects and ... . But hold on, maybe it's just me being too imaginative!

Well, there's a great little event happening by the Undercroft at UWI today that seeks to explore and discuss issues like these and much more. A group of final-year students from the CARIMAC-based Communication Analysis and Planning (CAP) course will be hosting a forum to provide the young males attending the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, with an avenue to talk about some of the masculinity, gender and sexuality issues that affect and interest them as men. Of course, women will also be there to share and respond. Sounds like fun, don't? And I'm very happy to be given a chance to 'eggs-up' inna di young people dem tings!

discussion
Yes, friends and peoples, I'll be in the middle of the excitement, as I'll have the pleasure of co-hosting, alongside Krystal Tomlinson, winner of the Public Speaking Competition in the 2011 World Universities Debating Championships. Today's 'sex talk' takes the form of a debate and discussion from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and forms part of the launch of what I consider to be an important initiative called 'UWI-man'.
UWI-Man is being established as a UWI-based offshoot of the regional entity Caribbean Male Action Network (Cariman) which is chaired by Dr Peter Weller and has membership drawn from all over the Caribbean. Cariman seeks to engage Caribbean men in the examination of existing beliefs and norms, the promotion of respect for diversity and the development of new paradigms and competencies, this towards creating opportunities to negotiate new relationships in order to achieve gender justice, social harmony and peaceful partnerships.

Sex is always captivating; as talk or action or imagination. Whether as the topic on the table or as the interaction on the bed (or whatever other available furniture you may choose), engagement in this subject is invariably absorbing and arresting. So I anticipate much heat and, hopefully, some light to emerge from today's discourse. It promises to be an orgy of opinions that will hopefully climax into increased spaces of empathy and understanding, and it includes entertaining interventions by dynamic young dub poet and actor Randy McLaren.

enterprising move
The people behind UWI-Man should be commended for this enterprising move. Check it out yu hear! But if you can't come, hush; I'll tell you about it when I come again. This sex talk should really be good for all involved. It's another valued step towards CariMAN's vision of 'a community of caring men, committed to partnering with women to create a just world where all people achieve their fullest potential'.
By the way, if you read the entire article because of the first word in the subject line, does that prove that sex sells?
