Jury shortage affecting start of Vybz Kartel's murder trial

A shortage of jurors could affect today’s start of the murder trial of entertainer Vybz Kartel.

Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, is accused of the July 2011 shooting death of St Catherine businessman Barrington ‘Bossy’ Burton.

When the matter came up in the Home Circuit Court this morning the embattled DJ pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Twenty jurors turned up to court this morning though at least 54 are required for jury selection.

Up to news time nine potential jurors had so far been challenged with only three being selected.

The court needs to empanel 12 jurors.

The proceedings were adjourned to 2 p.m. this afternoon when the jury selection process will resume.

Kartel is jointly charged with Lenburgh McDonald and Nigel Thompson.
The three have been in custody since 2011.

Kartel was granted bail on that charge but cannot take up the offer because he has another murder case pending in the Home Circuit Court.
The other accused are on remand.
