Haitian born R &B star Wyclef Jean shot only hours before voting begins

Haiti-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean has been released from hospital, after being treated for a gunshot wound to his hand.

The shooting took place late Saturday near the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince just hours before the start of voting in Sunday's  presidential elections.

Wycleff Jean, has been campaigning for fellow musician Michel    Martelly.

Jean's brother, Samuel, has confirmed the shooting but had no further details.

The Haitian police have not yet given an official report of the incident.

Haiti's presidential election was originally scheduled for 2010, but was delayed due to the devastating earthquake that struck the country in January last year.

Wycleff Jean had intended to run for president last August.

He later withdrew his bid, after Haiti's electoral council ruled that he was not eligible to run for president in his home country.

Presidential candidates must maintain five consecutive years of residency in the country.
