Vybz Kartel offered bail on one of two murder charges
Popular dancehall artiste, Vybz Kartel, was on Thursday offered bail on one of the two murder charges against
him.
Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was offered three million dollars bail today by High Court judge, Justice Bertram Morrison. Lead attorney, Tom Tavares Finson, said his client was offered bail in the Supreme Court, in relation to the alleged murder of St. Catherine businessman, Barrington 'Bossy' Burton.
Dirk Harrison, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions had strongly opposed bail, highlighting that the popular entertainer had another case of murder before the court.
But in its rebuttal, the defence pointed to the fact that the key witness in the case has recanted. However, Kartel's legal woes are far from over as his defence team will still have to persuade the Court to free him on bond on the other charge of murder.
Mr. Finson says the defence team is adopting a cautious approach in relation to the other charge.
“In the natural scheme of things we take it one step at a time we believe there has been an effort to destroy his character ……we are happy that we have gotten bail in relation to this first matter and it’s a first step” said Defence attorney, Tom Tavares-Finson
Kartel and fellow deejay, Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell; fashion designer, Calvin Haye; and Cayro Jones are charged with the August 16 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.
They are scheduled to return to the Corporate Area Criminal Court, Friday to to answer the charge.
