Businessman Patrick Powell Charged in Khajeel Mais killing


Fifty-year-old Patrick Powell, the St Andrew businessman implicated in the controversial shooting death of 17 year old Khajeel Mais, is to appear in the Corporate Area Criminal Court Thursday to answer several charges including murder.








Mr. Powell, a resident of Belgrade Loop in Kingston 19, was charged on Wednesday afternoon by investigators from the Major Investigations task Force, (MIT).



Head of the Criminal Investigation Branch, CIB, Assistant Commissioner, Ealan Powell told RJR News that
Mr. Powell was charged following a ruling handed down on Tuesday by the Director of Public Prosecutions:
“After intensive we have gotten to the point where we charged 50 year old businessman, Patrick Powell for the murder of Khajeel Mais. He was also charged with shooting with intent, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and failure to produce his licensed firearm for inspection”

ACP Powell, who led the investigation, said he's pleased with the outcome of the probe by his team.
“I think a lot of work was done, we were very diligent ….so let’s see what happens now” said ACP Powell.
Patrick Powell, a contractor and promoter, is booked to appear before the Corporate Area Criminal Court tomorrow.

Mais, a student from Kingston College, was shot dead on July 1 when the taxi cab in which he was a passenger was allegedly shot-up by the businessman along Highland Drive in Havendale, St Andrew. 
It’s reported that Mr. Powell opened fire on the taxi cab after the driver bumped into the back of his motor vehicle.

Mr. Powell who reportedly left the island for the United States, returned a week later and surrendered to the police.
