Whoever thought that Spring Break was dead in Negril had better think again. The hundreds of visitors who descended upon the Jungle night-club venue last Saturday night, was evidence that Negril continues to be a hot spot for college students.
The Heineken-sponsored Red Star concert event which took place in the expanded area at the back of the Jungle, gave the spring breakers more than their money's worth.
Headlined by Grammy winning international dancehall artiste Shaggy and featuring the energy god Elephant Man, Big Ship pilots Chino and Laden, newcomers Ras Noble, Timmi Burrell and Tiana, the show lived up to expectations.
Elephant Man was clearly the standout performer as he impressed the crowd with his crossover collaborations including the Get Low remix, Wine Up and Jook Gal. A trip down memory lane saw locals and visitors alike singing along to Signal De Plane, Pon Di River Pon Di Bank, Dip Again, Sweep, Nuh Linga and Elephant Message among others.
Shaggy was another crowd pleaser as Mr Bombastic delivered a good showing with Bombastic, Angel, Long Time and Broadway. He was later joined by Rayvon who tag-teamed on several of their hits, which were readily consumed by the crowd.
Big Ship's Chino enjoyed a smooth ride as Never Change From Mawning, Woman Pon Yuh Head, Rave All Night and the hip hop infused Protected ricocheted like flying daggers.
Laden gave a good account of himself as he rushed through Really Like You, Time To Shine and Working Hard.
Prior to the arrival of the big guns, Negril based singer Timmi Burrell put in a good performance and had the locals singing along to his current video hit Why Did You Leave Me.
Tiana, Ras Noble and Jesse Royal warmed the crowd with their short stints.
Selectors DJ Shine and DJ Rusti from the Jungle Night-club kept patrons dancing in wild abandonment prior to the start of the performances.
The Heineken Red Star Concert was promoted by Mile High Entertainment.
