Switzerland give the first major World Cup upset

Switzerland produced an outstanding defensive performance on their way to the first major surprise at the 19th World Cup finals in South Africa, a 1-nil win over European champions Spain.
Spain were in fact brilliant, playing with style and attacking pace but Gelson Fernandes' 52nd minute goal gave Switzerland the shock victory.

The Swiss are joint leaders of the group with Chile who edged CONCACAF representative Honduras 1-nil.
The only goal of an entertaining match came in the 34th minute from Jean Beausejour.
In the meantime, two-goal hero Diego Forlan scored twice as Uruguay moved to the top of Group A with a 3-0 victory over South Africa that leaves the World Cup hosts on the brink of a group-stage exit.
Uruguay moved onto four points in Group A while South Africa,  have just the one point from their two matches and are now favourites to become the first World Cup host never to make the second round.

However, their Captain Aaron Maquena says they will not give up hope.
CONCACAF giants Mexico and former champions France who are also on one point will meet in another Group A fixture on Thursday.
